Genome Comparison project near completion

Thanks to our members for their generous contribution to the Genome Comparison project which is very near completion. This weekend we expect to see the steady outflow of work units on this project go down to a trickle as we finish the last remaining batches of work. Within about 3 weeks, all of the final results should be in and returned to the researchers and at that time no further work units will need to be sent for this phase of the project. However, there may be some future point in time at which we revive this project when more sequenced genes become available for comparison.

We will soon be sending a news email about this project's completion along with news about other recent project completions and provide more information about future projects launching soon on World Community Grid.

Some of you who have set your preferences to only contribute to this project will find that your agent may go into a paused state. If that is the case, we encourage you to change your settings to contribute to the other projects. At some point we may reset the preferences for users contributing only to the Genome Comparison project back to the default of contributing to all projects, so that their agents do not become totally idle.

The researchers will be providing more information about this project's results soon. Thank you again for your spare computer cycles which have made this project possible!

100,000 Years of Run-Time and 100,000,000 Results Returned!

On July 7th we crossed two significant milestones. Our virtual community of World Community Grid volunteers has reached an outstanding 100,000 years of run time that has provided over 100,000,000 results to research scientists to help in the fight against cancer, muscular dystrophy, AIDS and other types of disease!

The power provided by our members has resulted in the completion of four projects:

Human Proteome Folding Phase 1
Help Defeat Cancer
Help Cure Muscular Dystrophy
Genome Comparison

World Community Grid's community continues to supply compute power for the FightAIDS@Home and Human Proteome Folding Phase 2 projects and in the next few months we will launch additional projects on flaviviruses, climate modeling and cancer.

A heartfelt congratulations to all the members who have made this incredible achievement possible!

World CommunityGrid is pleased to announce our BOINC migration plan. BOINC (BerkeleyOpen Infrastructure for Networking Computing) is a software platformfor volunteer computing and desktop grid computing.

WorldCommunity Grid members currently have the option of participating usingeither the United Devices (UD) or BOINC clients. While approximately67% of devices are running on UD and 33% on BOINC at this time, thismix is changing with a greater proportion of new devices registeringusing BOINC (80%) than UD (20%).

The UD software helped launchWorld Community Grid with MetaProcessor 3.0. However, this version isno longer being supported by United Devices. Over the past 18 monthswe’ve been developing our BOINC strategy to ensure a secure, troublefree and user friendly environment for World Community Grid.

Aspart of this planning, you may have noticed many BOINC enhancements andnew functionality on World Community Grid including: the BOINC simpleGUI, the results status page, the ability to conduct large scale Betatesting with volunteers, the ability to select preferred projects, andthe ability to control the CPU throttle via the website.

Wewould like to announce, effective immediately, that World CommunityGrid is migrating fully to BOINC. BOINC is a vibrant open sourceplatform and should provide many years of service to World CommunityGrid.

Elements of the migration plan are as follows:

UD Platform:
1.World Community Grid’s two active projects, FightAIDS@Home and HumanProteome Folding 2, will continue to run on UD (in addition to BOINC).
2.        Our plan is to run these projects on UD at least through the end of 2007 but no later than mid-2008.
3.        No new projects will be available on the UD platform.
4.        Before the end of October 2007, we plan to remove UD as one of the registration options.

BOINC Platform:
1.FightAIDS@Home and Human Proteome Folding 2 will run on BOINC untileach of these projects end (in addition to running on UD).
2.        All new projects will be available on BOINC Windows, Linux, and Mac.

Migration from UD to BOINC:

WorldCommunity Grid is asking members with devices on UD to begin migratingto BOINC at their convenience. The steps involved in migrating from UDto BOINC are as follows:

1.        At the present time:
a.        Uninstall UD:
Rightclick on World Community Grid’s icon in the lower right corner of yourdesktop tray and select "Exit.” This will stop the agent. Then youshould be able to use the Windows Add/Remove program to remove “WorldCommunity Grid Agent”.

b.        Register on BOINC:
•        Go to World Community Grid’s home page and make sure that you are signed in.
•        Click on the Join Now button.
•        On the download page, the "BOINC for Windows" has been preset as the default.  Scroll down and press the "continue" button.
•        Follow the installer instructions.

2.        After we modify the installer:
Tosimplify the migration from UD to BOINC, World Community Grid ismodifying the installer to automatically uninstall UD from the devicebeing registered as part of the BOINC registration. This feature shouldbe available prior to the end of September, 2007 and will provide aneasier migration path for members. We will let members know that thisis available via the forum and a newsletter.

Mass Installations:
Memberswho have multiple devices installed on UD will be provided withdocumentation about how to do a mass-installation using BOINC. Thisdocument will be posted to the website prior to the end of October,2007.

Communications:
The BOINC migration will becommunicated to all members through a number of vehicles. It will bedescribed through World Community Grid’s newsletter, which will bepublished in September of 2007. The newsletter article about themigration will target UD members and will provide them with informationon migrating themselves to BOINC.

After September, 2007, wewill continue to mention the migration in all World Community Gridemail communications until all members are off of UD or until UD is nolonger supported on World Community Grid.

During the first halfof 2008, we also will send periodic reminders to members stillreturning results on UD that they need to migrate to BOINC. Thiscommunication will tell them the name of the computers running UD andthe time that the last result was returned.

Information about BOINC:
Comprehensive information about the BOINC client was published in the March 2007 newsletter .  You can review this information here.

World Community Grid is pleased to launch the Discover Dengue Drugs - Together project by The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston, Texas, USA and the University of Chicago in Illinois, USA. The mission of Discovering Dengue Drugs – Together is to identify promising drug leads to combat the related dengue, hepatitis C, West Nile, and Yellow fever viruses. The extensive computing power of World Community Grid will be used to complete the structure-based drug discovery calculations required to identify these leads. Students from Lanier Middle School (Houston, Texas, USA) graciously contributed their original writings for this project's screen saver. These writings contemplate how to make our world better, a goal of this project and World Community Grid. For additional information on this project, please press the Research button in the upper navigation bar or click here.

In addition to providing information about this project, we have created a forum for discussions about the Discover Dengue Drugs - Together project. Launch of the AfricanClimate@Home Project

World Community Grid is pleased to launch the AfricanClimate@Home project by the Climate Systems Analysis Group at the University of Cape Town, South Africa. The mission of AfricanClimate@Home is to develop more accurate climate models of specific regions in Africa. This will serve as a basis for understanding how the climate will change in the future so that measures designed to alleviate the adverse effects of climate change can be better implemented. For additional information on this project, please press the Research button in the upper navigation bar or click here.

You Must Elect to Participate
Unlike our other projects, we will not opt anyone in to the AfricanClimate@Home project. Members will have to go to the My Projects page and elect to participate in this project. Additionally, we will limit the distribution of work units only to computers that have a download speed of 756kbps or higher.

This is because the AfricanClimate@Home project uses code that, like other World Community Grid projects, is very computationally intensive, but unlike other World Community Grid projects, it is also very data intensive. Similar to other climate simulations, AfricanClimate@Home requires three-dimensional information about temperature, pressure, wind, humidity and surface properties for the entire region, (known as a domain), being studied at a detailed grid level (known as a tile). In addition, information arriving at the boundary of the region of the time span being studied is needed. This requires a considerable amount of input data, and as the simulation runs, a large quantity of output data is produced.

The CPU impact of this on computers is anticipated to be similar to other projects running on World Community Grid because the computer resource requirements for AfricanClimate@Home are similar to that of FightAIDS@Home and HPF2. However, because AfricanClimate@Home requires a considerable amount of input and output data, the downloaded work unit size is anticipated to be approximately 77MB, which means it is approximately 150 times larger than a typical FightAIDS@Home or HPF2 work unit. A 756kbps network connection would take approximately 12-15 minutes to download the work unit. At this time, there are no alternative solutions to overcome this issue.

The size of the result data to be returned to the servers also is rather large and is exacerbated by the fact that most Internet connection upload speeds are slower than the download speed. While larger data downloads and uploads should not disrupt the normal operation of member machines, we want to err on the side of caution as we gain experience with this kind of project. We will make use of World Community Grid’s ability to trade off CPU time with result data size. This will be accomplished by running work units with a higher redundancy than other projects. This redundancy will enable us to have individual computers return a fraction of the total output data rather than one very large upload. It also will help us better validate results when heterogeneous processor types are involved. We will initially try this with a redundancy of 10, but may need to adjust this number as we gain experience with this project.

Why Am I Not Receiving Any Work Units?
Even when members opt in to this project, they may not immediately receive any work units. The total work in this phase of the project – which we are considering a pilot – is not large. We expect later phases of this project to be larger in scope and would expect more members to be able to participate at that time. The work units for this phase are arranged in ranks where subsequent ranks depend on the results of work units in prior ranks. Members might not receive work units because the initial set of work units may have already been assigned to other member machines. Successive work units cannot be assigned to member machines until their required input data has been received, which comes from the results of earlier work units.

The way that this project will proceed depends upon the number of member machines that qualify for the project per preferences and hardware requirements. In addition, we need to control the total network traffic to our servers so that all of World Community Grid’s projects receive their share of network bandwidth and that we do not create any disruptive network bottlenecks. We will be studying the interplay among all of the factors for this project and may adjust how we schedule work units accordingly.

Forums
Just as with our other projects, we have created a forum devoted to AfricanClimate@Home. To participate in this forum, please click on the Forums button in the upper navigation bar or click here. Only representatives from the University of Cape Town with the title “AfricanClimate@Home Scientist" are authorized to comment.

Other Projects
AfricanClimate@Home is the eighth research project to be launched on World Community Grid and one of four projects currently active. The other three active research projects are FightAIDS@Home, which has been running since November 2005; Human Proteome Folding - Phase 2 which has been running since July 2006; and Discover Dengue Drugs – Together, which launched earlier this month. 是否用緊UD?

電親個腦 發表於 2007-9-1 22:43

是否到此情況?

After shutting down Vista and restart, the work unit in progress errors out.The reason is, that the Operating System (OS) is not allowing enoughtime for the WCG(UD) or BOINC agent to close the program properly andstore the progress files on disk. A solution is found in the BOINC FAQ:exit code -1073741510 (0xc000013a) partly transcribed below **.Creating or increasing a shutdown delay value in the System Registry ofup to 60 seconds will resolve the problem. Though exiting the clientfollowed by the shutting down of the OS is an alternate way, it isimportant to leave enough time before proceeding to close/restart Vista.

**Copy / Paste the following italic text it into a Notepad window andsave with the *exact* name "WaitToKill.reg" to your desktop. Make surethe file extension is ".reg" (rename if need be).Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control]
"WaitToKillServiceTimeout"="60000"Toadd this fix to the System Registry, double-click the file you saved tothe desktop. Respond to all UAC and subsequent messages *Yes* and *OK*.Exit BOINC if not done already, allow a little time and restart Vistathru the proper Start menu option for the change to take effect.

Ifat boot time one observes a new download of several hundred thousandbytes or more in the main screen of the WCG(UD) agent, the cause ismost likely equal and the same fix would apply as for BOINC.

We have updated the download page to make it more consistent with best practices for application downloads from other websites. In addition, we are now directing users to download the BOINC 5.10 client. One of the features of the 5.10 World Community Grid - BOINC Agent is that during installation it will check to see if you have the UD agent installed. If found, then it will give you the option to uninstall the UD agent as part of the installation process.

The dates for project proposal submission have been updated for 2008.

In addition, we will be sending out Volume 5 of the World Community Grid Newsletter. Highlights of the newsletter include the two new projects (Discovering Dengue Drugs - Together and AfricanClimate@Home), information about the BOINC migration, and new team features - team email and team challenge. FAQs for team challenges are also available here . This edition of the Newsletter is retained online here .

Welcome to the Help Conquer Cancer Project, and thank you for participating in this important research. The mission of our project is to improve the results of protein X-Ray crystallography, which helps researchers not only annotate unknown parts of the human proteome, but importantly, improves their understanding of cancer initiation, progression and treatment. Although our focus is cancer, results from this project will help other diseases as well.
Analyzing the results from this experiment will also lead to better understanding the underlying principles of protein crystallography. For the first time, a comprehensive crystallography image analysis will be done, which was impossible before due to computational complexity. In turn, CrystalVision will be improved to provide faster and more accurate image classification. This will lead to more protein structures being determined. In addition, determining more 3D structures of proteins will also lead to improved in silico structure prediction.
Thank you again for making vital contribution to the project. It is highly appreciated, as it would take us over 162 years on the largest computer available to us to finish this computation. Although, we expect to finish the project in about 1-2 years on the World Community Grid, we will start analyzing the data incrementally. We will keep you informed about our results at http://www.cs.toronto.edu/~juris/WCG/wcg-hcc.html.
Thank you

Launch of the Nutritious Rice for the World Project

World Community Grid is pleased to launch the Nutritious Rice for the World project by the University of Washington's Computational Biology Research Group, Seattle, Washington, USA. The mission of the Nutritious Rice for the World project is to predict the structure of proteins of major strains of rice. The intent is to help farmers develop better rice strains with higher crop yields, promote greater disease and pest resistance, and utilize a full range of bioavailable nutrients that can benefit those people in regions where hunger is a critical concern.

Project Badge
If a member contributes a minimum of 14 days of CPU Run Time to this project, they will receive a Nutritious Rice for the World badge on their member statistics page and next to their member name when they post in the forums. There is a different badge for each research project and beta testing. To read more about badges, click here.

Forums
In addition to providing information about this project, we have created a forum for discussions about the Nutritious Rice for the World project. To participate in this forum, please press the Forums button in the upper navigation bar or click here. Only forum authors with the title "Nutritious Rice for the World -Scientist" are authorized to comment as representatives of the research organization: University of Washington (Seattle, Washington, USA).

Project Participation
Nutritious Rice for the World is the tenth research project to be launched on World Community Grid and one of six projects currently active. The other five active research projects are: Help Conquer Cancer (launched November, 2007), AfricanClimate@Home (launched August, 2007), Discover Dengue Drugs – Together (launched August, 2007), Human Proteome Folding - Phase 2 (launched July, 2006) and FightAIDS@Home (launched November, 2005). For more detailed information and FAQs about each of these projects, please click on the Research button in the upper navigation bar or click here. We thank all of our members for their valuable contributions to the projects to date and hope you will continue to help us process those, as well as this latest project.

Because there are six research projects running on World Community Grid, your grid agent could receive work units from any of the projects. You may elect to focus your computer's time on only particular projects, if you have a preference. To do so, press the My Grid button in the upper navigation bar and select My Projects or click here. Please note that members were not automatically opted in to the AfricanClimate@Home project due to the computationally intensive code. To read more specifics on the system requirements for Nutritious Rice for the World and the other projects, click here.

If you are already a member of World Community Grid, running the BOINC version of our software, there's nothing that you have to do to prepare for the Nutritious Rice for the World project. The next time your grid agent communicates with the servers, it will send you a work unit from one of the projects at random for which your machine meets the minimum requirements and according to your project participation election preference. To know which project you are running, please double-click on World Community Grid icon in the system tray, and you will see the title of the project in the display.

To contribute to the Nutritious Rice for the World project, you will need to be running the BOINC software rather than the United Devices software. If you are running the United Devices version of our software, you should use this occasion to migrate to the BOINC software so that you may participate in all current and future research projects. You may migrate to BOINC by following the instructions here. Migrating is easy and takes less than 5 minutes. The install process even uninstalls the UD software for you automatically. As you know, World Community Grid is migrating fully to BOINC and will no longer support UD after June 30, 2008. For more information about the BOINC migration, click here.

Questions?
If you have any questions, World Community Grid provides you with four methods of obtaining assistance: (1) Review the FAQs found in the Help section of the website; (2) Review the forums to see if anyone has asked/answered the question that you have; (3) Ask the question in an appropriate World Community Grid forum found here, and a Community Advisor or a more experienced member will provide an answer; or (4) Send an email to the support desk from the Contact Us link found at the bottom of every page of the website (except in the forums).

Thank you!
