Website Updates for September 24, 2008
Today we released a new version of the World Community Grid website. The changes in this release of the website are as follows:
- Internationalized dates on statistics pages. The World Community Grid website will now internationalize the dates on our pages based on the language set in your browser. This is independent of the language selection drop-down, so that, for example, members who are in an English speaking country where the date is displayed DD/MM/YY will see that format instead of the MM/DD/YY form used in the USA.
- User contribution by project - this is now the first thing you see on the My Grid page. This has been one of the features most requested by members. It will also make it easy for members to tell when they have enough run time to earn a badge. And speaking of badges...
- World Community Grid now has 3 levels of badges! This was another feature repeatedly suggested by members, so now you can move up through Bronze, Silver, and Gold level badges as you contribute more and more run time to your favorite projects. (Please see this FAQ for more information)
- Project badges are now shown in Statistics By Project section (so members can see what they look like if they don't have them)
- There is a new Human Proteome Folding paper on the research page, under Project Archives
- Links to active projects on left-hand navigation of Statistics By Project page. This will make it easier for members to navigate to the global statistics for the projects that are currently running on World Community Grid.
- We also added a new FAQ called: How do I set up the software to automatically start on Windows?

Version 6.2 of the World Community Grid BOINC software is now available
The major enhancements of the 6.2.28 client over the 5.10.45 client are as follows:
* The screen saver will display the graphics even if the screen saver has the password protected box checked
* There are several changes to improve the experience of running the software on Microsoft Vista
* A new preference is available to allow you to set the max percent of available processors to use. This field defaults to 100%. The number of processors used is the lesser of either this new value or the value of 'max number of processors' previously set on the device profile. * The latest version of libCurl is being used. This increases the number of proxies that are supported automatically
* The latest version of OpenSSL is being used
* A message is displayed if you are already connected to World Community Grid and you attempt to 'Add Project'. This is intended to help users understand the difference between joining a different BOINC project vs changing their participation for the projects available at World Community Grid
* The research applications will not start running until two minutes after BOINC has started. This will help some computers start up faster.
Members can now set the maximum resource consumption allowed by the graphics. This field is set for a specific device profile [url]http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/device/viewProfiles.do[/url] . The graphics will use at most X% of cpu time or run at a rate of at most Y frames per second. By default the graphics use at most 5% of cpu time and 7 frames per second.
* If the user installing the software is a new user or if they have never modified the cc_config.xml, then:
o The software will use [url]www.ibm.com[/url] in order to check if the BOINC client is connected to the internet. During the initial connection process, it will suggest that if the client cannot connect to the project or to ibm.com, then it will provide a list of things to check
o The BOINC software will now contact World Community Grid to find out if a new version is available rather than contacting the BOINC servers. This gives us control of when the message about a new version being available appears on members messages log.

World Community Grid is pleased to launch the The Clean Energy Project by Harvard University Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology Clean Energy Project, Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA. [color=red]The mission of The Clean Energy project is to discover organic materials to create a more efficient and lower cost solar cell. This in turn has the potential of improving the quality of the air in all regions of the world.[/color]
Project Badge
If a member contributes a minimum of 14 days of CPU Run Time to this project, they will receive a Clean Energy Project badge on their member statistics page and next to their member name when they post in the forums. There is a different badge for each research project and beta testing. To read more about badges, click here.

In addition to providing information about this project, we have created a forum for discussions about the The Clean Energy project. To participate in this forum, please press the Forums button in the upper navigation bar or click here. Only forum authors with the title "Clean Energy Project Scientist" are authorized to comment as representatives of the research organization: Harvard University (Cambridge, Massachsetts, USA).
Project Participation
The Clean Energy is the eleventh research project to be launched on World Community Grid and one of six projects currently active. The other five active research projects are: Help Conquer Cancer (launched November, 2007), Discover Dengue Drugs – Together (launched August, 2007), Human Proteome Folding - Phase 2 (launched July, 2006), FightAIDS@Home (launched November, 2005), and Nutritious Rice for the World (Launched May, 2008). We thank all of our members for their valuable contributions to the projects to date and hope you will continue to help us process those, as well as this latest project.
Because there are six research projects running on World Community Grid, your grid agent could receive work units from any of the projects. If you prefer, you may elect to focus your computer's time on only particular projects. To do so, press the My Grid button in the upper navigation bar and select My Projects or click here. To read more specifics on the system requirements for The Clean Energy Project and the other projects, click here.
If you are already a member of World Community Grid, there's nothing that you have to do to prepare for the The Clean Energy Project. The next time your grid agent communicates with the servers, it will send you a work unit from one of the projects at random for which your machine meets the minimum requirements and according to your project participation preference. To know which project you are running, please double-click on World Community Grid icon in the system tray, and you will see the title of the project in the display.

For now, the Clean Energy project will only be available for the Windows platform. We have a bit more testing to do for Linux and Mac and expect to have this proeject available for the Linux and Mac platforms during the week of December 8, 2008. Thank you for your patience.

As World Community Grid continues to grow, we require more and more space to store the results from, and data for, our members. Our current infrastructure has been running World Community Grid since November 2004. This infrastructure has worked very well for us. However, the growth of World Community Grid has reach the point where it is time to move to more powerful servers and have access to more bandwidth. This is a direct result of the awesome contribution that all of you have made and continue to make. We look forward to continuing to grow in the new environment.
To prepare for our expansion in 2009 and beyond, World Community Grid is getting brand new equipment and relocating the hosting environment to a new IBM location in Toronto, Canada. Moving to a new location will allow World Community Grid to have access to a new and secure hosting center that is being set up at this time. When fully migrated, we will be able to process the results returned by members and the statistics accumulated by members much more quickly and efficiently.
This hosting center move notification is important because it will provide a better experience for our members and because it may mean that some members may need to modify their firewall settings to allow the World Community Grid software to communicate with the hosting center. If your firewall does prompt you, please re-approve your computers access to World Community Grid. This hosting center move will not affect the URL or web address you use to reach the World Community Grid web site and any existing bookmarks will continue to work.
We are planning to be running in the new environment by the end of the first full week of January. In order to get there from here, we have a tremendous amount of work to do. Most of it will be behind the scenes and not visible to the members. However, some of the changes will be visible to the members. These changes include the following:
[color=red]We will start making changes soon to work unit deadlines so that we can reduce the amount of data to be transferred between hosting centers. The new deadlines will be only one week, so please keep an eye on your work units to make sure you can complete them on time.[/color]
When we are ready to transfer the databases, we will have to stop the website, forums and grid. We expect this step to occur around Jan 8th. During this time members will only see a page that explains what World Community Grid is and contains information about the progress of the change over and invites new members to return in a few days. Also during this time, the BOINC clients will not be able to communicate with the servers.
[color=red]Finally, our IP address will change. This will cause some people's computers firewalls to request permission to communicate with our servers. Our new IP addresses will be 198.20.8.241 and 198.20.8.246.[/color]
We anticipate that the move will be fully completed during the week of January 12, 2009.
