World Community Grid (中文名為:世界共同體網格計劃或世界公共網格)是一項由IBM主持贊助的分佈式運算的計劃，透過集合眾人家中或辦公室的聞置電腦運算能力來共同解決對人類重大難題，包括：疾病、傳染病和氣候改變等等。所有透過World Community Grid 運行的項目的機構必須係非牟利及將運算結果公開。

World Community Grid 使用 BOINC (Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing) 及UD Agent (United Devices Agent) 兩套軟件作運算平臺。但因為 United Devices 公司早前己經結束開發新版 UD Agent，導致軟件功能追不上現時的需求，包括對雙核/多核的支援，儲存一個或以上的任務包(Work Unit )作運算等。 World Community Grid 己經表明對 UD Agent 的支援在 2008年中終止及所有新的項目將不會在 UD Agent 平臺上運行。因此，本人推介使用BOINC，而下面的教學以 BOINC 為主。

World Community Grid 完成的項目：
Human Proteome Folding Project 由IBM贊助與紐約大學合作。此項目是一個研究蛋白質折疊，誤解，聚合及由此引起的相關疾病，例如瘋牛症，柏金遜症等等。

Help Cure Muscular Dystrophy 這項目研究肌肉營養不良症，這是兒童最普遍的肌肉萎縮症，導致病人全身肌肉無力。

AfricanClimate@Home由開普頓大學主導，透過研究非洲特定區域來開發出更凖確氣象模型，使科學家更清楚將來氣候變化及措取緩和措施減輕有害因素。
(此項目不會默認運行，原因係需要下載一個約77MB的任務包，運算完成後需要上傳一個約13MB任務結果包回到伺服器。官方建議用戶擁有756Kbps下載速度才參加此項目。有興趣的用戶需要手動設定(下方的教學有提及。)

Help Cure Muscular Dystrophy – Phase 2由法國肌肉萎縮症協會，法國國家科學研究中心及皮埃爾與瑪麗-居裡大學研究人員共同合作。第二期項目旨在調查多於二千三百個已知蛋白質與其他蛋白質的相亙反應，特別注重一些在神經肌肉疾病扮演重要角色的蛋白質。資料庫內數據有助研究人員設計分子用作抑制或加強約束特定巨大分子，希望從而更好地治療肌營養不良症及其他神經肌肉疾病。

BOINC 平台簡介
BOINC 平台是由加州大學柏克萊分校的電腦學系開發的開源分佈式運算平台，使其他機構可以使用此平台令自家項目更快上綫運算。BOINC 不但提供Microsoft Windows 版本，而且還有Linux及 Mac OS版本。

若電腦上有安裝UD Agent，請先移除才安裝BOINC，避免軟件有衝突。如果沒有安裝UD Agent，可移至下方紅字的注冊程序。

首先在工作列右下方的 UD Agent按右鍵，再按Exit 退出UD Agent。

然後進入控制台中的新增或移除程式，找尋 World community Grid Agent，按移除。

按是進行下一歩。

移除中。當此視窗消失完成移除程序。

注冊程序
曾使用UD Agent 的用戶，請在右上方填入在UD Agent 注冊時的會員名稱及密碼登入才按Join Now。這樣可以跳過注冊過程，直接進入下載頁面。

未曾進行在何注冊的用戶，可直按Become a member 中的 Join now。

Member name：新用戶可輸入自己喜愛的名字，按 Is this name available 檢查有否用戶使用相同的名字。

Enter a Password：在此輸入密碼用作將來登入網頁及BOINC。
Retype a Password：用作核對密碼是否正確。

E-mail Address：電子郵件用作接收密碼(若用戶遺忘密碼)及World Ccommunity Grid 所發出的最新消息。假如用戶不希望接收，可選擇不剔選Information的格。
Confirm E-mail address：用作核對電子郵件是否正確。

Country：用戶可根據自己居住的地方選擇

Select a Team：用戶可在Keyword Search 鍵入欲加入隊伍名稱。我們團隊名為PC Infinity (HK)。選好後按Select 確認。

假如用戶不希望接收由隊長寄來電子郵件，可選擇不剔選隊名下的方格。

Available Project：用戶希望參加所有World Community Grid 內的項目，剔選Participate in All Projects。
若只希望參加個別World Community Grid內的項目，便不剔選Participate in All Projects，剔選欲參加該項目旁的方格。

End User Software License Agreement：用戶閱讀及接受 Software License Agreement後，剔選此格。
最後按Continue 到下載頁面。

當見到此頁面，下載便隨即開始。下載完成後便可以雙擊執行檔安裝。

安裝
雙擊wcg_boinc_####_windows_intelx86.exe (#是版本名稱)運行。圖中為執行檔在準備中。

安裝介面，按Next。

閱讀並同意版權條款，可按 I accept the terms in the license agreement，再按Next。

選擇安裝路徑，如沒有特別需求預設便可。按Next。

如選擇 BOINC作為屏幕保護裝置，則剔選方格。否則便不剔選。

安裝中。

按Next 退出安裝並啟動 BOINC。

客戶端正與伺服器通訊。(注意：請設定防火牆讓程式通過)

部份用戶可能需要輸入帳號名稱與密碼。

按Finish 讓客戶端正式運算。

BOINC 功能簡介
在 World Community Grid 格中所顯示包括運行中的項目，運算時間，預計完成時間及進度。按 Application 下方可獲得更漂亮運算圖像。

用戶如對其他利用BOINC平台上運行的非World Community Grid項目有興趣，可按Add Project 加入。

Message：用戶可從此視窗中得知上下載檔案名稱和時間，為何不能連接伺服器等資料。

Snooze：用戶可按此選項使運算暫停，直至按Resume才會回復運算。

Preferences：用戶可在此將設定個人化。
Skin：可選擇自己喜愛的介面。
I want to customize my preferences for this computer only：不剔選則會跟據在網上的設定而運行。(往後的篇章會介紹網上的設定選項。)
Do work only between：用戶可設定運算的時間，若要二十四小時運算便選Anytime。
Connect to internet only between：設定何時連接互聯網作上下載任務包，若二十四小時都上綫便選Anytime。
Use no more than xxx GB of disk space：設定BOINC和項目可使用硬盤空間。
Use no more than xxx % of the processor：設定CPU 使用率，即使設定100%都不會令電腦變得緩慢或影響使用，因BOINC的CPU使用權屬最低，其他程式擁有更高CPU使用權。
Do work while on battery：設定電腦在電池模式時運行與否。
Do work after idle for xxx minutes：設定閒置多久 BOINC才會運算。
設定完按Save退出介面。

Advanced View：可進入更詳細介面。(一般用家可以不用進入。)

BOINC進階教學
Projects 頁面的右方的顯示的資料(由左至右)包括
Project：列出參加的項目@BOINC。
Account：用戶的帳戶名稱。
Team：用戶參加團隊的名稱。
Work done：累計BOINC積分。(若要查閱UD版積分，須到World Community Grid 網頁。縱使現在使用BOINC平台運行WCG，可是WCG方面還是同時派UD版積分。)
Avg. work done：平均BOINC積分。
Resource Share：各個項目運算率。
Status：項目情況。

在Command列下的選項可對項目有一定控制作用。(由上至下)
Update：手動上傳已完成的任務包，取得最新積分及設定檔，及更多任務包(不適用於World Community Grid)
Suspend：暫停運算該項目的任務包。
No new tasks：不下載新任務包
Reset project：刪除所有與該項目有關的檔案與任務包。
Detach：使電腦不再運行此項目，運行中的任務包將會遺失。

Website：可快速連接到World Community Grid 特定網頁。
World Community Grid：連接到主頁。
Global Statistics：檢視全球數據。
My Grid：檢視個人統計和設定。
Results Status：檢視個別任務包狀態。
Device Profiles：更改個別電腦設定。
Research：獲得更多相關研究項目資訊。
Forums：論壇可獲得最新資訊。
Help：搜尋救助資料。

Tasks頁面的右方的顯示的資料(由左至右)包括
Project：運行中的項目名稱。
Application：研究名稱。
Name：任務包名稱。
CPU time：已運算時間。
Progress：完成進度。
To Completion：預計完成時間。
Report deadline：任務包過期時間。
Status：項目狀態。

Commands下的Show graphics 會更漂亮運算圖像。
Suspend：暫停運算該任務包。
Abort：取消運行中的任務包，將會不獲任何積分。
(注意：BOINC會自動上傳或下載任務包。)

Statistics頁面顯示與積分相關的數據。
Show user total：顯示用戶所有積分。
Show user average：顯示用戶平均積分。
Show host total：顯示用戶使用中電腦的運算積分。
Show host average：顯示用戶使用中電腦的平均積分。

Project 只在用戶有參於多於一個BOINC項目時才有用。
< Previous Project：前一個項目。
> Next Project：後一個項目。

Mode view只在用戶有參於多於一個BOINC項目時才有用。
All projects：顯示所有BOINC項目積分，每一個BOINC項目會用一個圖表。
One Projects：用一個圖表顯示指定BOINC項目積分。
All projects (sum)：用一個圖表顯示所有BOINC項目積分。

Disk頁面內有兩個圓形圖。
右面顯示各個BOINC項目佔用的硬盤空間。
左面的 total disk usage 顯示整個硬碟資訊。
Free disk space：淨餘的硬盤空間。
Used by BOINC：BOINC 總計佔用硬盤空間。
Used by other program：其他程式佔用硬盤空間。

如果若用戶希望轉回簡單介面，可在上方的View--->按Simple View。

如果遇到連線困難，可嘗試利用Proxy。在上方的Advanced--->Options--->HTTP Proxy。剔選 Connect via HTTP proxy server，然後在Address 輸入Proxy 網址及在 Port 輸入 Proxy Server 使用中的端口。如果Proxy Server 要求登入名稱及密碼，可在User Name和 Password 輸入對應資料。

用戶若關閉BOINC，右按在工作列右方BOINC 圖示，再按Exit。

確認離開視窗。若不希望將來離開BOINC時再遇到此視窗，可剔選該方格，然後按OK。

World Community Grid 網頁設定介紹
用戶若在多台電腦安裝BOINC，而不希望在各電腦獨立設定，可透過 World Community Grid 網頁作中央管理。

用戶有兩種方法進入World Community Grid 網頁設定頁面。一是按BOINC介面的 Device Profiles。二是透過登入 World Community Grid網頁。(以下會介紹此方法。)
用戶在瀏覽器鍵入 www.worldcommunitygrid.org，然後右上方填入在WCG注冊時的會員名稱及密碼登入後按Sign in，再按 My grid。在 My Grid 首頁會顯示詳細的個人運算統計及歷史圖表。

按左方的Device Manager，此頁面顯示了安裝了BOINC的電腦的名稱、使用中的設定檔和安裝的日期。

再按Device Profiles，如果用戶要設定一個以上設定檔，請按BOINC Device Profiles下方的Create A New BOINC Device Profile for Home/ Work/ School 其中一個。若只需用一個設定檔，按Default來編輯。

Minimum Impact：選此項會減少BOINC對電腦的影響。
Maximum Output：選此項會令BOINC會最大限度運算。(普遍來說，選此選項也不會對電腦日常操作有太大影響。)
Custom Profile：選此項可有更多細微的設定選擇。
Set as Default：剔選後，往後安裝的BOINC都會根據此設定檔設定。

Do work only between the hours of：設定BOINC可運算時間，若兩個選項都選相同時間，這意味著BOINC 可二十四小時運算。
Connect to the internet only between：設定BOINC上/下載任務包時間，若兩個選項都選相同時間，這意味著BOINC 可二十四小時與伺服器連接。
Use no more than XX% of processor time：設定BOINC可獲分配多少處理器的使用率。設定100%可使BOINC獲得最多處理器資源。(普遍來說，選此選項也不會對電腦日常操作有太大影響。)
Use no more than XX% of total memory：設定BOINC可獲分配不超過多少記憶體使用量。

Available Project：用戶希望參加所有World Community Grid內的項目，剔選Participate in All Projects。
若只希望參加個別World Community Grid內的項目，便不剔選Participate in All Projects，剔選欲參加該項目旁的方格。
若剔選在灰綫下的方格，假如用戶所選的項目暫時沒有任務包，伺服器便會派發其他項目任務包。

在Advanced Options可分別對處理器、硬碟和記憶體及網絡使用等作進階設定。
處理器使用設定
Do work while computer is in use：當電腦使用時才作運算。
Do work only after computer is idle for：電腦閒置多久才作運算。設定0，即使不閒置也會運算。
Do work while computer is running on batteries：設定在電池模式會否運算。
On multiprocessors，at most use xx processors：設定在多核或多路的電腦系統中，BOINC可以多少個處理器作運算用途。
Project weight：參於多個項目時，World Community Grid可獲多少運算資源比例。
Switch between applications every xxx minutes：設定多久時間切換至運算其他項目。

硬碟和記憶體使用設定
Use no more than xxx Gigabytes of disk space：使用不多於某數量的硬盤空間。
Leave at least xxx Gigabytes of disk space free：設定預留下多少硬盤空間。
Use no more than xx% of total disk space：不使用多於某百份比的總硬盤空間。
Write to disk at most every xx seconds：設定多少秒才會將暫存在記憶體運算中的任務包寫入硬盤中儲存。
Leave the applications in memory when preempted：當被先佔用時，會否容許程序留在記憶體內。

網絡使用設定
Confirm before connecting to internet：是否在連接互聯網前確認。
Disconnect when done：當上/下載任務完成後，會否自動斷線。
Connect to network about every xx days：設定BOINC會多久自動連接網絡。
Maximum upload rate：設定上傳速度。設定0代表不限速。
Maximum download rate：設定下傳速度。設定0代表不限速。

當客戶端與伺服器通訊，新的設定檔才生效。

設定完，請按Save存檔。
如果不再需要此設定檔，可按Delete刪除。
如果不想存檔，按Cancel 離開設定頁面。

成功存檔。

最後的步驟是為根據各電腦的情況載入不同的設定檔。按左方的Device Manager，然後按需要載入設定檔電腦名稱。

在Current Assigned Device Profile 選要載入的設定檔，然後按Save。最後按右上方的Sign out 離開My Grid。

* 1 GB Hard Disk Drive space available for use
* The ability to display 8-bit graphics at 800x600 resolution
* An Internet connection with minimum 756 kbps speed
* Operating System: Windows 98, ME, 2000 or XP

這篇教學是基於World Community Grid 的BOINC 5.8.15版本而寫。

因此部份介面/設定/操作方法於BOINC官方版本或其他項目BOINC版本有所不同。本人可能會因應BOINC的改進而不斷更新完善此教學。

My apologies for not posting an update sooner -- in case you aren'taware of this, UD had our yearly conference last week in Boston (see http://www.ud07.com/index.php ). Check out the agenda and speakers -- it was our best conference yet!

So, it's time for an update on the Grid.org migration and beta programI wrote about last quarter. The good news is that the new release ofGrid MP is complete and we are still targeting Q2 for the upgrade ofGrid.org (as previously announced).

We are still planning to implement a beta program for testing ofthis version prior to final upgrade. Several new requirements(including something exciting we'll be announcing by the end of Q2)have necessitated a slight delay in scheduling the beta program, so thetarget timeline to begin beta has slipped to early Q2 -- though westill intend to complete the full upgrade by end of Q2 as originallyplanned.

If you've already volunteered for the beta program, thanks! If youwould like to, please let us know as there is still time. We will reachout to all volunteers with beta program info in the next few weeks.

So, to summarize, here's what you can expect from UD regarding grid.org in the next 3-4 months:

> By early Q2:  Beta program initiated
> Mid Q2:  Announcement about the next big Grid.org project
> By end of Q2:  Grid.org migration to the latest release complete

Therefore, it is with greatpride for all the accomplishments of this pioneering resource, andabove all with the utmost gratitude to each of our members around theglobe, that we announce Grid.org will be retiring on Friday, April 27,2007.

We’ll be making a public announcement on the site later this week,but we felt it was important to give you, our loyal member base, anearly heads-up out of respect for the years of support you’ve given toGrid.org. This way you’ll have time to gather final statistics,exchange contact info, and prepare for the official shutdown.

What exactly is happening:
At 12:00 noon Central Time on Friday, April 27, Grid.org will retire:Jobs will stop running, forums will be closed, and the website will beupdated to reflect the retired status of this resource. We will leavethe actual servers up for 1 week, so agent messages about this actioncan continue to be sent to members around the globe who might not checkforums regularly. We will also leave the Stats up for one week so youhave plenty of time to gather this data. After that, only the Home andProjects pages will remain, along with the instructions foruninstalling the agent ( http://www.grid.org/help/faq_uninstalling_agent.htm ).

Why?
Grid.org has completed its established mission to prove the benefitsand viability of Internet-based grid computing. Grid.org was thelargest and most ambitious public interest grid venture ever attemptedwhen it was conceived – and thanks to Grid.org (and more specificallyto all of you), today such a grid is no longer a novelty. Many publicgrids are now available, sponsored by large organizations betterpositioned to provide support to millions of member volunteers and thescientists who leverage their processing power. So, with the underlyingtechnologies now well established globally in both public and privateresearch programs, Grid.org’s goal of establishing the underlyingtechnology has been achieved.

But what about…
We realize that over the past few months, Grid.org has made severalannouncements about upgrades coming in anticipation of a couple of newprojects that we were working on. While we were fairly optimistic aboutthese projects being launched, they ultimately fell through for anumber of reasons. We realize that many of you had looked forward toparticipating in a beta program ahead of launching these projects, andwe’re sorry you won’t have that opportunity.

Moving on: Where to go from here?
It’s clear from your years of loyalty to Grid.org thatInternet-based research projects of this kind are important to you… andso we’re sure many of you will take your valuable resources to otherprojects of this kind that are ready and willing to accept you as newmembers.

What are the recommended minimum system specifications for a Windows system?
Each research project we run on the World Community Grid has different minimum machine requirements.

For the Help Cure Muscular Dystrophy project, the minimum requirements are (BOINC workunits will not be available in Phase I, but will be available in Phase II):

* At least a 550MHz Intel Pentium processor or equivalent
* At least 60 MB RAM (with virtual memory enabled)
* At least 25 MB free disk space available for use by the project (in the agent install directory)
* The ability to display 8-bit graphics at 800x600 resolution
* An Internet connection with minimum 40 kbps speed
* Operating System: Windows 98, ME, 2000 or XP

For the Genome Comparison project, the minimum requirements are:

* At least a 160MHz Intel Pentium processor or equivalent
* At least 60 MB RAM (with virtual memory enabled)
* At least 25 MB free disk space available for use by the project (in the agent install directory)
* The ability to display 8-bit graphics at 800x600 resolution
* An Internet connection with minimum 40 kbps speed
